The most impressive zip lines in the UK (shine or rain)

Flying man on a zip line

Introduction

There's something about a zip line that makes everyone feel like a kid again.
The harness clicks in, your feet leave the platform and, for a few seconds, you're flying.
The UK is home to some of the most impressive zip lines anywhere, from record-breaking rides over Welsh slate quarries to an indoor course you can try on a rainy Saturday afternoon.
Here are five that are worth adding to your list.

In a nutshell

• For all weather: rain or shine, RockUp Watford's zip line flies across the Atria Watford atrium, so your adventure never gets cancelled. It's the UK's biggest indoor zip line.
• Speed: Velocity 2 in Snowdonia is billed as the fastest zip line in the world, with riders topping 100mph.
• Friends: Titan in Blaenau Ffestiniog was Europe's first four-person zip line.
• England's longest: Skywire at Bluewater in Kent stretches around 725m across a former chalk quarry.
• Safety first: Every great zip line experience starts with the right kit, a proper briefing and trained instructors.

1. RockUp Watford: the UK's biggest indoor zip line

Where: Atria Watford shopping centre, Hertfordshire

You don't need to drive to the mountains for a proper zip line adventure.
At RockUp Watford, the UK's first indoor High Ropes and Zip Wire course starts inside the climbing centre and heads straight out above the Atria Watford atrium.
It's the biggest indoor zip line in the country, giving you a bird's-eye view over the shoppers below.
The course is our highest ropes course across all our UK centres, and it takes up to 16 adventurers at a time.
Best of all, it's included in the price of a standard climb ticket, so you can climb the walls and fly across the atrium in one visit.

Good to know:
• Height requirement: all climbers must be at least 1.4m tall
• Weather: it's indoors, so rain never cancels your session
• Price: included with a standard climb ticket
• Best for: families, birthday parties and groups of friends

2. Velocity 2: the fastest zip line in the world

Where: Zip World Penrhyn Quarry, Bethesda, North Wales

If speed is your thing, this is the big one.
Velocity 2 sends riders head first, lying flat like Superman, along four parallel lines that stretch almost a mile across a former slate quarry.
You fly around 500ft above the ground and can top 100mph, which is why it's billed as the fastest zip line in the world.
The views over Snowdonia and the quarry lake are as memorable as the speed, if you can keep your eyes open.

Good to know: age, height and weight limits apply, so check them with Zip World before you book.

3. Titan: Europe's first four-person zip line

Where: Zip World Llechwedd, Blaenau Ffestiniog, North Wales

Zip lines are more fun with friends, and Titan was built for exactly that.

Titan lets four people fly side by side, seated in a harness, across two zip zones totalling 1,080m. Speeds reach over 50mph as you soar over the slate heaps and mountains of Snowdonia.

It's a slightly gentler ride than Velocity, which makes it a great step up for families and first-timers.

Good to know:
• Height requirement: minimum 1.2m
• Weight limit: maximum 130kg
• Under 18s: must be with an adult, with one adult for every three children
• Price: from £55

4. Skywire at Bluewater: England's longest zip line

Where: Hangloose Adventure, Bluewater, Kent

Just off the M25, Skywire runs four parallel wires, each around 725m long, across a former chalk quarry.

You launch from a tower perched on 40m chalk cliffs, giving a 55m drop, and can reach up to 60mph on the way down. It's an easy day out from London, and a perfect add-on to a shopping trip.

Good to know:
• Minimum age: 8 • Height requirement: minimum 1.2m
• Weight limit: between 35kg and 120kg
• Under 16s:a parent or guardian must be on site

5. Skywire at the Eden Project: England’s fastest zip line

Where: Hangloose Adventure, Bluewater, Kent

Few zip lines come with a view like this one.

Skywire at the Eden Project sends you 660m over the famous biomes from more than 95m up, at speeds of up to 60mph. Two parallel wires mean you can race a friend or family member to the bottom.

Pair it with a day exploring Eden's rainforest and gardens for a proper Cornish adventure.

Good to know:
• Minimum age: 8 • Weight limit: between 30kg and 120kg (children under 10 are often too light, so weigh them before booking)
• Under 16s:an adult must be on site

Staying safe on a zip line

At RockUp, climber safety always comes first, and the same goes for any zip line you try.

A great zip line experience is one where you can relax and enjoy the ride because you know you're in safe hands.

• Listen to the briefing: your instructor will show you how your harness works and what to do at the start and end of the line.
• Check the requirements: every zip line has its own age, height and weight limits. They're there to keep you safe, so check them before you book.
• Dress for it: wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes, and tie back long hair.
• Leave loose items behind: empty your pockets and remove anything that could fall.
• Tell the team: let staff know about any medical conditions before you take part.

Conclusion

From record-breaking rides over Welsh quarries to a soaring flight above a Watford shopping centre, the UK has a zip line for every kind of thrill-seeker.

If you're looking for an adventure closer to home, and one the rain can't cancel, RockUp Watford is the perfect place to start.
